A mid-winter musical trip to Spain is in store for our audience, which will be warmed by orchestral color and virtuosity to match the gifts of world-renowned guitarist Sharon Isbin. The ever-popular Chabrier Espana is followed by Rouse's Concert de Gaudi. This concerto was commissioned and premiered by Isbin, and composed on themes drawn from Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez, which follows in the second half. We pay tribute to Mozart's 250th birthday (January 27, 1756) with this overture, since Don Giovanni was reputedly highly 'active' in Spain! ("in Espana, gia mille e tre!") The evening concludes with one of Ravel's most brilliant and effective orchestral masterpieces.
