Saxophone Dances

November 17, 2007 | 12:00 AM

Capitol Saxophone Quartet
John Adams: The Chairman Dances
Philip Glass: Saxophone Quartet Concerto
Bernstein: Three Dances Episodes from On the Town
Gershwin: An American in Paris

This program taps its feet! First, a modern classic by John Adams, from the opera, Nixon in China. There’s a taste of musical ‘minimalism’ in this dance, which sets up the Glass concerto perfectly. No harsh chords and dissonances, but gently shifting colors and textures which work their magic with time. The Capitol Quartet will delight you, and a bit of enthusiastic applause might shake loose an encore with its hair down. Our second half speaks for itself: Bernstein and Gershwin really knew how to dance!
