The Peoria Symphony Orchestra is looking for bright, organized, detail-oriented individuals with excellent communication skills who possess a good attitude and the ability to take direction and follow through on projects. Interns work side by side with professionals as they experience the day-to-day workings of a world-class symphony.

  • Work Period: Fall and Spring Semesters and Summer
  • One semester internships or based on performance and work load.

Music Business Intern

Our internship program provides the opportunity for candidates interested in a music business career to receive a complete overview of the workings of a professional symphony orchestra. This experience will have components which would also be applicable to other segments in the arts industry or non-profit organizations. Interns will assist in all phases of operation which may include oversight of specific projects, front and back of house experience at concerts and assisting in the day-to-day operations.

Specific responsibilities vary by time of season and may include experience and activities in the following areas:

Concert Production

  • Assist Orchestra Librarian with preparation and dissemination of music;
  • Assist Orchestra Personnel Manager with preparation of materials and meeting needs of musicians;
  • Coordination of Guest Artist travel, hotel, itinerary, bio/photos;
  • Assist Stage Manager at rehearsals and backstage at concerts.

Patron Engagement

  • Learn the ticketing system by assisting with the Box Office duties during office hours;
  • Assist with the Box Office on concert dates;
  • Assist with patron/audience receptions and events.


  • Assist in the execution of the Annual Fund campaign — creating labels, stuffing and sealing envelopes;
  • Learn how to prepare bulk mailings and assist in implementation;
  • Assist with the planning and execution of special donor events and activities.

General Administrative Duties

  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Computer skills, good writing skills, strong organizational skills, able to work with the public in person or over the phone.

Marketing and Public Relations Intern

Our internship program provides the opportunity for candidates interested in a marketing or public relations career to receive a complete overview of the workings of the marketing and public relations activities. The Marketing Intern will assist with essential marketing functions such as direct mail and email marketing and will help coordinate distribution of orchestra materials, perform analysis on various campaigns and prepare and assist with surveys. The Intern will gain substantial knowledge of the Orchestra’s database system and will develop an understanding of subscription and single ticket campaigns and timelines. The Marketing Intern will also provide concert support when assigned and administrative support to the entire organization.

  • Assist with writing press releases
  • Assist with student ticket marketing initiatives
  • Assist with digital/social media initiatives
  • Assist in building email lists by coordinating solicitation and capturing patron emails at concerts and other opportunities
  • Help create monthly email newsletters
  • Help develop audience retention strategies and campaigns
  • Help take photos or video for use on web site, social media, archives and any other promotions
  • Maintain day-to-day updates of web site as needed e.g. enter links to broadcast interviews
  • Provide concert support for Peoria Symphony Orchestra concerts, as well as special events and concerts
  • Assist with distribution of orchestra materials
  • Assist with program advertising campaign

Job Requirements

  • Strong knowledge of InDesign software.  Strong writing skills, strong communication skills, strong attention to detail, proficient in Photoshop, Excel, Word, Publisher, able to work with the public, project management skills, video or photography skills and social media experience helpful.

Marketing & Social Media Intern

The Peoria Symphony Orchestra (PSO) seeks a highly motivated, creative, innovative intern to lend support in the areas of social media and grassroots research and promotion. Our ideal candidate will be an organized self-starter with excellent communication skills and ability to brainstorm creative marketing strategies. This is a great opportunity to gain valuable knowledge and experience in marketing and/or arts management.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Participate in monitoring the PSO’s social media presence.
  • Research and write social media content for PSO performances, education programs and community events; assist in administrating the PSO’s social media plan and editorial calendar.
  • Research and write content for on-line newsletter.
  • Provide support for grassroots marketing efforts, including researching influential community groups, leaders and local businesses within specific PSO venue areas.
  • Provide on-site support for PSO concerts and special events.
  • Provide general administrative support to the Marketing Department and other duties as assigned.


  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including proofreading skills.
  • Basic knowledge of features on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, SnapChat and other social media outlets.
  • Awareness of current social media trends and willingness to explore, adapt and respond quickly to the constantly changing social media environment.
  • Excellent ability to analyze and interpret data, and identify patterns.
  • Excellent administrative, organizational and internet research skills.
  • Experience with Adobe InDesign and Photoshop, Mail Chimp a plus
  • Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines.
  • Motivation and enthusiasm to develop your skills in marketing and social media.
  • Knowledge of, or a desire to learn about and experience the performing arts and/or music education, and a sincere desire to make classical music accessible to new and diverse audiences.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office.
